January - Happy New Year

  • Ventilate the Greenhouse on sunny days

  • Recylce your Christmas Tree by shredding it for mulch.

  • Prune Trees

  • Force Rubarb

  • Keep putting out feed for the birds - High carbohydrate is good for them this time of year.
     

December
   Is just round the corner but we can still carry on sowing vegetable seeds.
   Cress, indoor salad leaves and mung bean make perfect additions to winter salads.
   Or why not sow some onion seed for an all year round crop, be careful to sow thin because of the dreaded onion fly!

October- November Jobs

  • October is here, guess that means greenhouse clean up time!

  • Got roses? Time for a prune.

  • Start pruning back some hardy shrubs that have gone wild. Also cut back any herbaceous perennials that have finished and are looking spent and yellow .

  • Don’t dig up spent runner bean plants, cut down and dig in those root modules – they are nitrogen fixing – Free Fertiliser, lovely jubbly!

  • Plant up any more spring bulbs before a frost or wetter weather.

  • Thinking about adding a tree into the garden?  September - November is a good time for this. Need help?

  • Keep a good mix of greens and drier brown materials on your compost bins to ensure its rots well

  • Stake any Brussels sprouts plants to ensure a stronger plant for higher yield!

 

September Jobs

  • Fill garden gaps with plants such as Sedum, Penstemon, Helenium!

  • Continue to feed hanging baskets and container plants

  • Divide herbaceous perennials and re plant in other areas – free gardening, that’s what we like :)

  • Start thinking about your spring bulbs - Crocus here we come!

  • Deadhead deadhead deadhead! Keep perennials and annuals going for longer.

  • Make sure pumpkins and winter squashes do not rot, check and place a tile underneath each squash if necessary!
     

August Jobs for allotment holders

  •  There is still time to sow some more seeds for a later crop.

  • Spring Cabbage and Chinese Cabbage, which is a late crop as well as hardy lettuce.

  • Winter hardy Spring Onions

  • Fast growing Radishes.

  • Late spinach can

  • Last sowing of kohlrabi and turnips.
    Other Jobs

  • Runner Beans will be at the top of the canes now. Simply pinch out the growing tip to encourage broader growth below.

  • Ensure Tomatoes are watered regularly to prevent drying out. Uneven watering will cause the fruit to split. Lack of water causes calcium deficit resulting in blossom end rot.
